The postpartum aisle is overwhelming, and most of the "essentials" lists out there are really just long shopping lists in disguise. Here are the few things I actually reached for, over and over, in those first foggy weeks. Real talk, from someone who has now done this three times.
The breast therapy pads that saved me
Somewhere around week two with my first baby, engorgement hit hard. Then it started creeping toward the early signs of mastitis, and I felt awful. Sore, feverish, and honestly a little scared. The thing that carried me through was a simple set of hot and cold breast therapy pads. I warmed them before feeding to help with letdown and clogged ducts, then chilled them afterward to bring down the swelling. Same little pads, two completely different jobs. If you are nursing, do yourself a favor and keep one pair in the freezer and another by the bed. You can find the ones I used here.
Lanolin nipple cream, for as long as you need it
The lanolin nursing cream was a must as I was getting used to breastfeeding for the first time. But by my third I didn't need it anymore! Everyone is different. You do you. It is safe for baby and you do not have to wipe it off before a feeding, which matters a whole lot at 3am. If those first weeks have you wincing, it is worth keeping a tube on the nightstand.
A water bottle you can open with one hand
Nobody warns you how thirsty nursing makes you. The other hand is always holding a baby, so a one-handed, leakproof water bottle turned into one of those small things I used every single day. It keeps water cold for hours, which is the difference between drinking it and forgetting it on the counter. Here is the one I love.
The honest takeaway
That is genuinely most of it. You do not need the whole aisle. A few things that solve real problems, plus a lot of grace for yourself, will carry you further than any checklist. You are doing great, mama.
